Eastern North Carolina injury lawyer Danny Glover Jr. says the heightened popularity of the Outer Banks as a vacation destination also brings more risk of car, motorcycle, bicycle and pedestrian accidents.
“We urge everyone who visits or lives in the Outer Banks region to be extra careful as crowds are expected to grow this summer,” said Glover of the Eastern North Carolina personal injury lawyers of Teague Glover, P.A. “No one wants to see a summer vacation ruined by an automobile accident.”
North Carolina’s Outer Banks, stretching from Corolla in Dare County south to Cape Hatteras, recently was named a “Top 10 U.S. Beach” by Stephen Leatherman, a.k.a. “Dr. Beach.” Also, in a recent online poll, viewers of The Weather Channel named the Outer Banks “Best Surfing Beach.”
Among other recent accolades, U.S. News Travel ranked the Outer Banks as the “Best Family Beach Vacation in the U.S.,” while NBC’s TODAY listed the Cape Hatteras National Seashore as one of the country’s “10 Best Beaches for Families.”
“Recent and well-deserved accolades for the Outer Banks as a top family vacation spot are sure to result in increased visitor traffic this summer, and a heavy tourist season certainly will have a welcomed economic impact on our area,” Glover said.
“But, based on our experience as attorneys, we are also mindful that a rise in tourist traffic also comes with a rise in accident risks,” the Elizabeth City-based lawyer said. “It’s unfortunate, but true, that tourists tend to be distracted by new surroundings and vacation activities. This can lead to car accidents that can hurt other motorists, motorcyclists, bicycle riders and pedestrians.”
The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau says that local hotel, motel and rental occupancy in 2011 increased from 12.4 million in April to 23 million in May, and it peaked for the summer at 110.2 million in July 2011. The Visitors Bureau’s numbers for 2012 so far show an occupancy rate of 13.79 million in April, marking an increase of 10.44 percent from the previous year.
“Crowded roads are an increased hazard on their own, but tourists can also be distracted by the sights of the Outer Banks while driving,” Glover said. “And, unfortunately, vacationers are known to over-indulge in alcohol and get behind the wheel.
“Geographic elements, like changing sight lines at bridges, speed limit changes at small towns and unconventional intersections, like at N.C. 12 and U.S. 64 and 158 at Manteo, can confuse visiting drivers and contribute to accidents, too.”
Teague Glover, P.A., investigates car, motorcycle and other vehicle accidents in preparation of personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits on behalf of people injured in wrecks.
Glover said that, in addition to greater numbers of cars and passenger trucks, the Outer Banks are popular with motorcycle riders, bicyclists and pedestrians, all of whom are more vulnerable to injury or death in a collision.
When accidents occur and people are seriously hurt, the injured parties should seek legal advice about their rights and options, Glover added.
“Injuries from a car accident actually do more than ruin a summer vacation,” he said. “They are often costly and long-lasting. So, it’s important to make sure one’s rights are protected.”
